PM: Everyone is a leader in transforming Thailand toward security, prosperity, and sustainability
September 21, 2020, Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri disclosed that Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the 2020 annual meeting of National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), held at Impact Arena, Muangthong Thani, Nonthaburi province, to evaluate performances and accomplishments of the 1st phase of the Master Plan under the National Strategy (2018-2022), and the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan. The Prime Minister also delivered a keynote speech on “The New Normal: Thailand in the Post COVID-19 Era”. Participating in the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister and Public Healthcare Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Minister of Digital Economy and Society Buddhipongse Punnakanta, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Labor Suchart Chomklin, PM’s Secretary General Dissathat Hotrakit, NESDB Secretary General Thosaporn Sirisumphand, government officials, and the media. Gist is as follows:
According to the Prime Minister, even though COVID-19 situation in Thailand has eased, Thai people still have to keep guards up and be prepared for possible future risks and challenges. The 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan would help in laying strong foundation, minimizing structural weaknesses, and enhancing “New Normal” strengths for the future through major development schemes in various aspects, e.g., 1) assistance provision to low-income earners through state welfare card scheme; 2) assistance provision to farmers through income insurances; 3) “Tasting, Shopping, Spending” scheme to stimulate economy and domestic consumption; 4) approval of budget for 30-Baht universal healthcare (gold) card scheme; 5) increase of fund of the National Health Security Fund; 6) drought problem solving; 7) high-speed train construction project, etc.
The Prime Minister also disclosed that the Government has drafted an ad-hoc master plan, under the national strategy framework, for economic and social rehabilitation as a result of COVID-19 pandemic (2021-2022), with the aim to empower grassroots economy; 2) proliferate tangible prosperity to the regions; and 3) stimulate domestic demands and tourism, and minimize disparity on accessing digital technology. Projects to be implemented under the plan include “One Tambon One New Theory Agriculture” scheme, sub-district integrative development project, among others.
The Prime Minister also underscored Thailand’s resilience through: 1) preparedness; 2) adaptability; and 3) change, for sustainable growth under the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, with an aim to evenly provide assistance to the vulnerability groups, create employment and revenues in the regions, and to lay foundation for economic restructure. Four development issues that the Government places special importance on during the next 2 years are: 1) empowering grassroots economy; 2) enhancing national competitiveness for long-term sustainable growth; 3) developing people’s capacity and quality of life; and 4) improving and developing infrastructure.
Lastly, the Prime Minister emphasized that all sectors’ engagement is very important for economic and social mobilization in the “New Normal” era in order to drive forward without leaving anyone behind. Everyone is a key leader in transforming Thailand toward security, prosperity, and sustainability at all levels.
