May 3, 2026, Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek disclosed that during the first month of the incumbent Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the Southern border issues have been seriously addressed both in terms of safety, peace process, and economic, social, and education dimensions, aiming to foster understanding, trust, and sustainable peace in the area, while adhering to people-centeredness.
On April 17, 2026, during the first week after assuming his position, the Prime Minister took a field visit to Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani provinces to closely monitor the situation and hand down policy directives to all relevant agencies, both civilian and military. He urged them to work with adherence to the principle of “Understanding, Reaching Out and Development” in a bid to ensure that problem‑solving is targeted and truly responsive to the needs of the people.
On the development, the Prime Minister instructed relevant agencies to expedite elevating quality of life of the local people in all dimensions, i.e., income generation, economic opportunity, education, and coexistence in the society with understanding. They should aim at minimizing vulnerability at the community level and promote trust and confidence between officials and the people, which is a key foundation to long-term peace.
During the period, a meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by the Prime Minister was also held, and the following resolutions have been made: 1) Developing education system in line with local contexts; 2) Enhancing the capacity of volunteers; 3) Elevating cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia; 4) Appointing head of the Peace Dialogue Panel; and 5) Appointing the Government’s Special Representative for addressing issues in the Southern Border Provinces.
In advancing the peace process, a new head of the Dialogue Panel has been appointed from the civilian side, Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, Director of the National Intelligence Agency, who has had extensive experience in this field. He will continue constructive and inclusive dialogue and ensure that opportunities are given to all concerned parties to contribute and share their perspectives on finding solutions.
According to the Government Spokesperson, the Government is strongly committed to ensuring that the people in the Southern Border Provinces can safely live with opportunities and tangible improvements in their quality of life. Listening to the voices of the people and working closely together will be key to building sustainable peace and trust.
