PM reveals Govt’s approaches to address impact of Middle East crisis on Thailand and people
April 6, 2026, Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek disclosed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul delivered a statement regarding measures on resolutions and prevention of fuel shortages, and on mitigation of people’s plights as a consequence of the Middle East conflict, gist of which are as follows:
According to the Prime Minister, the Middle East has been a major global source of oil and natural gas, and the ongoing conflict has caused sharp increases in the prices of fuel, natural gas, and related by‑products, especially fertilizers and plastic pellets, in the world market. The impact spreads worldwide, and Thailand is not an exception, as the country imports approximately 50% of its energy from the Middle East.
The conflict has continued to escalate, and attacks were now targeted at oil production sites, refineries and depots, and oil and gas transport systems across the region. Even if the conflict deescalates in the future, it will take time for oil and gas production infrastructure in the Middle East to be recovered to normal output. Consequently, high energy prices and shortages of petrochemical products are expected to persist for some time.
The Prime Minister stated that the Government decided to present these facts in order to ensure public understanding and mentally prepare them for adjusting lifestyles in response to the situation. He committed that all cabinet members will work tirelessly to resolve problems, provide assistance, and safeguard the interests of Thai people of all sectors to enable everyone to overcome this difficult period.
What the Government will do are:
- Reduce Government expenditure and reallocate the budget to prioritize impact mitigation on the people
- Restructure energy prices, including fuel and electricity, to lower energy costs for citizens as quickly as possible
- Implement relief measures to alleviate public hardship, such as, the ‘Half-Half Plus’ scheme, and soft loan provision for farmers, industrial operators, and SMEs
The Prime Minister emphasized that Thailand is facing a global crisis. Thai people must accept reality and adapt together in order to overcome this crisis. National unity is the most important social capital at this time. He expressed confidence that everyone’s cooperation would help the country get through this crisis and live with the changes that lie ahead.
