Tajikistan and Thailand to reinforce diversified areas of cooperation

May 17, 2013, at 1745hrs, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra welcomed H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, on his state visit to Thailand to attend the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit during May 17-19, 2013. An official welcoming ceremony was held with the review of honor guards, followed by discussion on state administration between the two leaders at the inner Ivory Room, Thai Khu Fah Building, Government House. PM’s Secretary General Suranand Vejajiva revealed gist of the discussion as follows:

PM Yingluck and the President of Tajikistan came to terms on the reinforcement of mutual cooperation in diversified areas of both countries’ best interests as well as the promotion of people-to-people relations, tourism, and mutual trades to start a new era of mutual relations. Tajikistan expressed its intent to boost relations with Thailand particularly in the economic and socio-cultural aspects, and cooperation and alliance in international stages. Thailand also has a policy to nurture relations with the Central Asian region as seen in its establishment of the royal embassy of Thailand in Astana, Kazakhstan last year of which the area of coverage also includes Tajikistan. PM Yingluck also congratulated Tajikistan for its current membership of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and hoped the WTO membership of Tajikistan would boost national economy and enhance its competitiveness at the global stage.

According to PM Yingluck, Thailand was ready to provide Tajikistan with academic assistance which would be of benefit to Tajikistan’s development, such as the development of sufficiency economy, measures to curb with the climate change, food security, and development on public health. During his stay in Thailand, the President of Tajikistan is scheduled to visit the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Center in Chiang Mai which was established under the royal initiative to have the study center set up with objectives to conduct study research and experimentation on appropriate development methods on the conservation of watersheds, watershed eco-system, reforestation and agricultural development.

PM Yingluck also commended Tajikistan for its success in hosting a ministerial ACD meeting in March 2013, and confirmed Thailand’s support on Tajikistan’s establishment of the ACD Early Warning Center Coordination Network. She was also pleased to learn that Tajikistan would host the 3rd ACD Energy Forum, and invited the Tajik President to attend the 2nd ACD Summit to be held in Thailand in March 2015.

In addition, both leaders agreed to the expansion of regional and international connectivity through land and rail transportation which would further promote regional tourism, trade and investment in the future.

The discussion also included a topic on how to tackle the global challenges. Both parties agreed that cooperation mechanism within the UN framework is essential as no single nation would be able to deal with a problem alone. This is also significant for global and regional economic development as well as international security. Close relations between Thailand and Tajikistan would support such cooperation both on the bilateral and multi-lateral dimensions.

Both Tajikistan and Thailand are aware of the importance of water and water management as a main requisite of sustainable development process. Thailand commended Tajikistan’s leading role in the campaign “The International Decade for Action ‘Water for Life’” which declares the years 2005-2015 as a decade of “Water for Life”.

On this occasion, the President of Tajikistan extended his invitation for PM Yingluck to attend the High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation to be hosted by Tajikistan during August 20-21, 2013.

After the discussion, both leaders witnessed a signing ceremony of a Convention on the Avoidance of Double Taxation between Thailand and Tajikistan before joining a state dinner at Santi Maitree Building, Government House.
