The 22nd ASEAN Summit will be hosted by Brunei Darussalam, the current ASEAN Chair, under the theme “Our People, Our Future” in order to reflect the significance of people sector in mobilizing ASEAN and determining the region’s future. In the meeting, ASEAN leaders will follow up on the establishment of ASEAN Community, and related progresses based on the resolutions made during the past meetings.
For Thailand, PM Yingluck will make a follow up on the earlier proposals made by Thailand such as Drug-free ASEAN operation plan, human trafficking operation plan, disaster management, resource mobilization for ASEAN connectivity, and promotion of people participation in the ASEAN Community. PM Yingluck will also reveal standpoint and vision on the future direction of ASEAN particularly on how to maintain good economic environment, and to make ASEAN a key mobilizer of various regional cooperation frameworks.
Furthermore, PM Yingluck and other ASEAN leaders will follow up on the progress of ASEAN Community Building to be realized in 2015 which comprised 3 main pillars, namely, Economic Pillar by expediting various schemes to accommodate trade and investment such as ASEAN Single Window, revision of rules and regulations, and RCEP Negotiation; Political-Security Pillar by promoting peace and stability, human rights, good governance, and cooperation on anti –drugs, human trafficking, and corruption; Socio-Cultural Pillar by promoting the participation of civil society, and disaster management.
On this occasion, PM Yingluck will also propose for the connectivity of the 3 Pillars through cultural activities and tourism in order to promote people’s interaction, as well as push forward mutual facilitation and assistance in the areas of medicines, public health, and education among the state members which will be in accordance with the human rights standard. PM Yingluck will also attend the 7th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) meeting where the plan for connectivity between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand will be pushed forward through construction of more motorways and sea ports; the establishment of a special economic zone and product distribution center; and the standardization of various products and services such as halal food, rubber, agricultural products, tourism, as well as custom border facilitation process.
