March 15, 2013, Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), paid a coutersy call on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Purple Room, Thai Khu Fah Building, Government House on the occasion of her visit to Thailand to attend the Global Policy Group Meeting in Chiang Mai. PM’s Secretary General Suranand Vejajiva revealed the detail of the meeting as follows:
WHO Director-General expressed her pleasure to meet with PM Yingluck again following the first meeting during the UN General Assembly meeting last September, and reported to PM Yingluck on the result of the Global Policy Group Meeting where she met with WHO regional directors from the 6 regions in Chiang Mai that the meeting went well particularly the academic discussion on health and health management.
WHO Director-General also commended PM Yingluck on Thailand’s healthcare policies which proved successful and enable Thai citizens to equally access proper healthcare services. Its sustainable healthcare management is a good example to several other countries. Moreover, the WHO Director-General invited PM Yingluck to attend the launching of WHO public assessment report which will be held during the UN General Assembly meeting this coming September.
PM Yingluck thanked WHO for its support in establishing healthcare coverage scheme in Thailand’s neighboring countries particularly Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Cambodia, and reaffirmed that the Thai Government would be working closely with WHO to ensure better health of the people both in the country and in the region.
