Thailand set to be a regional gateway and investment hub of Belgium

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Elio di Rupo of the Kingdom of Belgium at the Government House, Brussels. According to PM’s Secretary General Suranand Vejajiva, the discussion covered strengthening mutual relations and promoting cooperation in the areas of mutual interests. Gist as follows:

Thailand and Belgium has had long term relations due to the fact that both countries firmly believe in the same values such as democracy and the principle of human rights, to name a few. Both leaders agreed to continue with the amicable relations in a form of significant partnership both in the bilateral and multi-lateral levels. The impending visit of Prince Philippe of Belgium to Thailand during March 17-22, 2013 along with Belgian businessmen emphasizes mutual relations and confidence between the two countries, and PM Yingluck affirmed that Thailand was pleased and honored to receive His Royal Highness during his visit. It is expected that the signing ceremony of the Joint Plan of Action for Thai - Belgian Cooperation, which will be the framework of cooperation between the two countries, will be held during the visit of His Royal Highness Prince Philippe.

According to PM Yingluck, Thailand, at present, is politically and economically stable with well-founded democracy, good governance, and the Rule of Law. It is expected that the country’s GDP growth rate will be 6.4%, and economic growth rate at 5.5% this year. Thailand boasts for its strategic location that makes it capable as the gateway of EU to ASEAN. The Thai Government also has plans for infrastructure development worth 66,000 million US Dollars which cover investments on transportation, telecommunication, and energy to create new investment opportunities and enhance the country’s competitiveness.

The Belgian Premier commended Thailand’s solid growth and good image, and applauded PM Yingluck’s proclamation on the ban of ivory trade. He also expressed his support on Thai investment in Belgium in the more diversified areas, promotion of medical tourism, and people-to-people relations. Thailand is a popular destination for Belgian tourists, and promotion of medical tourism as an alternative tourism would be a boost with high standard of quality and much lower in prices. At present, THAI International Airways has increased direct flights between Bangkok and Brussels from 3 to 4 flights a week to accommodate increasing number of tourists from Belgium, and is planning to make Brussels a connecting hub to other regions (Europe, North America, and Africa). At the same time, Thailand has requested Belgium to consider exemption of Schengen Visa for Thai passport holders.

On technology transfer, Thailand and Belgium came to terms on the transfer of technology in the areas of medicine, food security, nanotechnology, innovation, high-tech research and development, and logistics in order to enhance Thailand’s competitiveness. On world economy, both Premiers discussed and exchanged views on EU’s and global economic trends. PM Yingluck reaffirmed Thailand’s close relations with EU and insisted on working together for the best interests of both parties.
